Study suggests later school start time leads to fewer crashes

With schools throughout the nation starting for the year after a summer with a more relaxed schedule, many high school students have to change their sleep schedule to wake up early enough to make it to school on time. In recent years there has been much discussion revolving around just how early that should be. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently weighed in on the topic. It does not think that any high school should start before 8:30 a.m.

National campaign sought to reduce fatal crashes on I-90/94

From time to time different entities take action to try to reduce the number of car accidents that occur on our nation's roads. Though those campaigns are often locally based, this past weekend a national group took action. The International Association of the Chiefs of Police sponsored a challenge that is focused specifically on Interstates 90 and 94 which run from coast to coast. Called the I-90/94 Challenge, the point of the four day long safety campaign was to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to traffic accidents.

Where car safety is concerned bigger may be better

Last week we wrote about recommendations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety regarding the types of cars teen drivers should have to be safest on the roads. One of the characteristics mentioned in that post is the size of the car. When it comes to teen drivers, the bigger and heavier the vehicle, the better. As it turns out, this appears to be the case with other drivers as well.

Federal government researches driving impairment due to marijuana

Despite the fact that few spend much time thinking about it, motor vehicle accidents occur. There are many reasons that such an incident might occur, including impaired driving. Whether the impairment is due to alcohol or drugs, the end result can be devastating.

Vehicle type matters in teen driver safety

Readers are likely aware that there are many reasons that car accidents occur. Drunk driving, speeding and distracted driving are often factors in these incidents occurring. Depending on the specific circumstances surrounding each incident it is possible that serious injuries could be the end result. In an effort to minimize the injuries suffered in car accidents car makers continue to improve the design of the vehicles they produce, adding safety features as they become available. A study recently conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety suggests that these safety features are something parents shopping for vehicles for teen drivers should be cognizant of.

Accident involving car and moped may have been intentional

While it is true that many motor vehicle accidents are the result of negligence, usually the ensuing crashes are not on purpose. This may not have been the case in an Eau Claire area crash that recently occurred. A 20-year-old man is facing criminal charges after being accused of purposely driving his car into a man on a moped. Following the collision the man driving the car allegedly fled the scene.

Counselors available after head-on collision that killed 2 teens

Enough obstacles exist for drivers on a sunny and dry day, but when it rains, the roadways can easily become treacherous. Slick pavement, the possibility of hydroplaning and how heavily the rain is falling can --individually or collectively -- increase the possibility of losing control of a vehicle. The Wisconsin State Patrol suspects that inclement weather played a role in a recent head-on collision.

Woman injured in hit-and-run accident in Wisonsin

Granted, there are many rules of the road. There may even be too many for many Wisconsin residents to remember. After driving at posted speeds and following all traffic signs, one that every driver should remember is to never be responsible for a hit-and-run accident by leaving the scene after a collision.

A car accident can have lasting effects on everyone involved

Every decision an individual makes has potential consequences. When that decision is to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking, the consequences can be deadly. One Wisconsin man discovered at his sentencing hearing just how much his poor decision to drink and drive has affected -- and will affect -- the people he hurt in the car accident that he caused.
