17-year-old faces charges after alleged drunk driving crash

A 17-year-old Wisconsin teenager is facing drunk driving charges after a rollover crash on I-43 that occurred on Friday, March 27. In addition to a first offense drunk driving charge, the teenager is also facing multiple charges that include causing bodily harm by reckless driving and operating a car without the owner's consent.

The charges stemmed from an incident that investigators state began after the boy allegedly removed the car keys out of a jacket pocket of an employee working at a Brookfield restaurant that the teen had formerly been employed at. According to authorities, the boy then stole the employee's Toyota Scion and took two teenage girls, ages 14 and 15, and a 15-year-old boy on a ride before crashing the vehicle.

The teen's blood alcohol content was allegedly reported at 0.16 in contrast with Wisconsin's proof of intoxication law that is considered .08. The law also states, however, that drivers who are below the age of 21 are required by law to maintain a level of absolute sobriety.

The three passengers in the vehicle received injuries during the accident and were subsequently transported to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, which is located in Wauwatosa. In addition to the charges pending against the teenager, the three may also face the possibility of charges being filed against them for being a passenger in a stolen vehicle.

Teenagers found guilty of Wisconsin's "Not A Drop" law may face a $200 fine along with a three-month suspension of their driver's license for a first time offense. Parents of teenagers who are facing charges for DUI may find it beneficial to learn more about their children's legal rights and how they can be protected.
