Wisconsin State trooper arrested for DUI after car accident

Even those who enforce the law, and should have plenty of experience witnessing the dangers of drinking and driving, do not always follow the law. For example, a Wisconsin State trooper was recently arrested on suspicion of DUI after getting into a car accident that badly injured his passenger.

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the suspect, 31, was off-duty and driving on a highway in northwest Wisconsin early in the morning. It appears that he lost control of his car while navigating a roundabout. OnStar alerted police and emergency services, but when they arrived at the accident scene the vehicle was gone.

Shortly afterward, the suspect called 911 and troopers found his car in the parking lot of a hardware store, with damage that matched evidence at the crash site. A man was inside, unconscious. He was taken to the hospital, where he was in intensive care as of Dec. 29. He is 25 and a high school wrestling coach.

The suspect was arrested by his fellow troopers on suspicion of DUI causing injury. His future as a trooper likely depends on the outcome of this drunk driving case.

It is frightening that a person whose job it is to enforce traffic safety laws may have driven over the legal limit. Without knowing for sure what happened, it could be an indication how common this type of dangerously negligent behavior is in Wisconsin.

Nationwide, trunk driving kills and injures thousands of people each year. Law enforcement does its best to stop drunk drivers before they cause an accident, but they cannot catch all of them in time.
