It’s a parent’s worst nightmare–a child suffering serious injuries in a motor vehicle accident. Sadly, the parents of a Western Wisconsin boy are facing this very reality. Earlier this month the 9-year-old was involved in a hit-and-run accident with a semi.
The afternoon incident occurred where a street crossed a highway as the 3rd grader attempted to cross the highway with a friend. Though they initially stopped to let traffic pass, the boy involved in the incident stepped onto the highway before the truck had completely passed. This caused the boy to collide with the back part of the tractor trailer.
Following the incident the boy was flown to an area hospital. At that time his injuries were described as life threatening. Fortunately, since then his condition has stabilized though his recovery is expected to be a long one. He suffered the following injuries:
- Minor brain bruising
- A portion of his jawbone shattered
- Broken leg
- Broken arm
- Broken pelvic bone
The truck continued on after hitting the boy. So far, despite a search, the vehicle and its driver have yet to be identified. Until that truck is recovered, it is hard to get a complete picture of how the accident unfurled.
The boy’s mother indicated that he will likely remain in pediatric intensive care for several weeks. Eventually he will need physical therapy. The cost associated with this level of medical care is great. Depending on who is deemed responsible for the accident, if the truck is ever identified, it is possible that the boy’s family could seek financial compensation for his injuries.
