Did fatigue cause Wisconsin car accident?

Authorities and personal interest groups tend to emphasize keeping drivers off of their cell phones and keeping them from drinking and driving. One car accident cause that may not get enough attention is driving while fatigued. A lot of drivers get behind the wheel of their cars when they are really too tired to drive.

That may be the cause of a recent Wisconsin accident that sent several people to the hospital. The driver that is believed to have caused the accident admitted to police that he may have fallen asleep prior to the accident. The 18-year-old driver was heading east on US Highway 14 when he drifted into oncoming traffic into the path of another vehicle. The other vehicle was unable to get out of the way in time and the two collided.

The teen's vehicle came to a stop rather uneventfully in a hay field. The other vehicle, however, spun, flipped over and finally rested on its roof. One passenger in that vehicle was seriously injured and was taken by helicopter to a Wisconsin hospital where she remains in critical condition. Another passenger in the vehicle was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening. Another occupant was taken to the hospital to make sure she wasn't injured.

Police are still conducting their investigation into the crash. Even though the young driver said that he may have fallen asleep, he also said that he had to swerve to avoid hitting a deer. It remains to be seen what charges, if any, will be filed in connection with this car accident. In the meantime, those occupants that were injured have could file personal injury claims to recover the medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering and any other damages this accident has caused.
