Wisconsin increase drunk-driving patrols through Labor Day

For a lot of people across the state of Wisconsin, this upcoming weekend signals the end of summer, which may lead some people to the decision about whether to drink and drive. For our blog readers, this is an easy enough decision because they know the risks associated with such a choice and may have seen firsthand what can happen to victims in drunk-driving accidents. Others may not be as observant though.

Hopefully, the number of drunk-driving accidents will be kept to a minimum this weekend, especially because of the increased patrols that will be out on the state’s roadways through the end of Labor Day. Called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," the campaign this weekend will have 300 patrols across the state looking out for impaired drivers and getting them off the roadways as quickly as possible. Last year, this annual crackdown contributed to 27,000 drunk-driving convictions, and likely saved a number of lives in the process.

Although the main concern is that people will choose to drive drunk, another fear this year is of drunken walking. State Patrol Maj. Sandra Huxtable says that the fear this year is that intoxicated people will choose to walk home instead of drive. While this may prevent them from causing an accident, it could put them in danger of being hit by other vehicles instead. Just as drunk drivers are encouraged to find a sober ride home, so too are intoxicated walkers as well.

It’s important to remember that while drunk driving is completely preventable, there are still drivers out there who make the poor decision of getting behind the wheel and drive while intoxicated. As our readers can tell you, drunk-driving accidents can be life-changing events and can lead to serious litigation for those responsible of causing such an accident.
