Man dies in hit-and-run car accident on Wisconsin highway

The Shawano County Sheriff's Department was called to a stretch of County Highway M near the overpass at Highway 29 at approximately 2:30 a.m. on June 28. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive man in the road. It was surmised that he was the victim of a hit-and-run car accident.

The man's injuries were severe and he did not survive. He was pronounced dead by the county coroner about four hours after he was found. The man, who was not from Wisconsin, was just 22 years old. What the man was doing on the highway without a vehicle is not known.

Evidence at the scene has led authorities to believe that the young man had been hit by a vehicle. It is believed that the vehicle is either an SUV, pickup truck or some other large passenger vehicle. That vehicle would have been traveling east on Highway M toward Shawano when the accident occurred. No other information is available about the vehicle at this time. At this point, there are several unanswered questions regarding the death of this pedestrian such as how long he had been laying in the road before someone alerted authorities.

Another question is whether the victim could have survived if he had received medical attention at the time of the car accident. Once police have found the driver and vehicle that hit the victim, they may get some answers. As for the young man's family, under Wisconsin law, they retain the right to file a wrongful death claim against whoever is deemed responsible for his death in this car accident. Until that person is located, however, the family will be left wondering how someone could have run him down and kept going.
