While there’s no doubt in people’s minds that drunken driving is dangerous, most would agree that an even deadlier combination would be drunken driving and a police chase.  While both offer a considerable risk for other people’s safety, together they can increase that risk by so much more.

Such was the case to our east this month for two passengers after the driver of their car decided to flee from police at around two o’clock in the morning.  The chase through Shorewood ended in what could have been a fatal accident when the vehicle crashed into a tree.

Police believe that the driver of the vehicle was intoxicated just prior to the alcohol-related accident that injured not only the driver but the two other passengers in the car as well. Although police attempted to stop the driver before the accident occurred, reports indicate that the driver accelerated away from officers instead of pulling over. Because of this reckless decision, the chase ended when the driver lost control of the vehicle, slamming into the tree.

According to police, charges are pending against the driver for operating while intoxicated causing injury and fleeing an officer. Because the investigation is still ongoing though, it’s unknown how these charges will affect future actions by the injured passengers.

As most of our readers know, injuries sustained by passengers can be just as bad as those suffered by the driver. And when reckless driving is involved, a passenger is at the mercy of the driver. Seeking compensation in circumstances such as this–while maybe not the first thought on someone’s mind–can sometimes mean the difference between holding a driver accountable for their actions and feeling a sense of injustice. Seeking assistance from a lawyer can help victim’s determine if this is the best course of action for them.
