Wisconsin Lutheran bishop accused of driving under the influence

| Apr 22, 2013 | Drunk Driving Accidents

A Lutheran bishop in Wisconsin has been charged in the death of a woman that was out jogging recently. Police say that the bishop was driving under the influence at the time of the accident. When police interviewed him shortly after the accident, he denied being intoxicated.

The bishop said that he was “playing with” the radio and GPS in his vehicle when he struck the woman. Police gave the bishop a breath test which indicated that his blood alcohol level was 0.128. The blood alcohol limit in Wisconsin is 0.08 percent.

The victim had been jogging when she was struck by the SUV driven by the bishop. After the impact, the SUV left the scene and continued on to an area gas station. The bishop is facing three counts of drunken and negligent homicide and hit-and-run. He is out on bail, but is required to report to authorities every day.

Anytime someone gets behind the wheel of a car after they have been drinking, they are risking not only their own life, but the lives of everyone around them. Most everyone knows the dangers of driving under the influence, but that doesn’t stop everyone from doing it. The victim in this accident was 52 years old and had three children. Because of one person’s actions, those three children will never see their mother again. The fact that her family has the right to file a wrongful death action against the bishop in order to recover the costs and damages they have sustained in connection with her death won’t bring her back to them.
