Wisconsin motorcycle crash claims another life

Residents near the town of Richfield were horrified late last month when a 21-year-old man was killed in a tragic car accident involving a motorcycle.

According to police reports, the 21-year-old motorcycle rider was travelling westbound behind a large truck. When the truck turned into a Richfield truck stop, the motorcyclist continued along the westbound road. In a matter of moments though his bike struck a car that was exiting the truck stop at the same time the large truck had been entering.

Glass and metal littered the roadway when police and emergency vehicles arrived. In a crumpled heap near a puddle of gasoline lay the 21-year-old motorcyclist who medical personnel later pronounced dead.

The driver of the red car involved in the crash, a 29-year-old man, was uninjured but clearly shaken by the fatal accident. Police shut down both directions of traffic to investigate the accident.

Without an update on the accident, residents are still left with lingering questions. Who is to blame in this incident? How could it have been prevented?

In recent decades, many organizations have attempted to prevent deadly accidents such as this from happening in the first place. Many states offer "Start Seeing Motorcycles" courses and offer educational information through their local departments of transportation in an effort to bring motorcycle awareness to the public.

According to a 2010 study conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, 98 motorcyclists were killed in that year alone which was a 2.2 percent increase from the previous year. Many wonder, after reading a story like this, what will this year's numbers hold?
