New prosecutor to try fatal drunken driving case

Last September, students and faculty of one Fond Du Lac school were saddened to hear that a former teacher of theirs was struck and killed by a drunk driver while riding his bike along the side of the road.

According to reports, the 22-year-old driver had consumed several drinks before leaving a friend's house that night. He claims to have seen the blinking light on the 36-year-old teacher's bike but did not have enough time to stop. A witness in a car driving in the opposite direction claims that the driver's vehicle was travelling on the shoulder when the fatal alcohol-related accident occurred.

Damage from the driver's vehicle led police to believe that the teacher was struck in the middle of the front of the vehicle. The driver, who claims that he thought he had hit a deer, pulled over and went back to check.

The victim was rushed to a Milwaukee hospital where he was pronounced dead the next day.

Now, almost a year later, the Fond Du Lac district attorney has arranged for another prosecutor to take over the case, citing that he had a relationship with a relative of the defendant.

The driver will now go on trial next July. If convicted, his punishment could be similar to last year's judgment which means he could face up to 25 years in prison.

Stories such as this can make alcohol-related accidents difficult to hear, especially for surviving families members who may relate closely to the events. If a drunk driver causes injury, compensation may be obtained to help cover hospital bills; or in the case of death, compensation could cover funeral costs as well.
