River Falls head-on crash under investigation

Wisconsin has some busy roadways, and Highway 29 between River Falls and Prescott is no exception. A portion of the highway was closed for a couple of hours on July 1 due to a head-on collision. Both drivers sustained injuries that were initially characterized as non-life-threatening.

The accident occurred when a Cadillac driven by a 56-year-old man from Welch, Minnesota, crossed the center line and collided with a pickup truck driven by a 70-year-old man from Prescott. Given that the collision was head-on, the drivers should feel extremely lucky that their injuries were not more severe. However, the elderly Prescott man was still in the hospital the day after the crash. Though he was listed in fair condition, his medical bills may become their own kind of injury once he returns home.

According to a local news site, the man from Welch was up and walking around at the scene of the crash just prior to being taken to an area hospital. The sheriff's department and the Wisconsin State Patrol are still investigating what caused him to cross into oncoming traffic. There was no immediate indication that charges against either driver were pending.

Too often, drivers become complacent on the road, and they forget that driving is a privilege that comes with responsibilities. Every motorist in Wisconsin has a duty to exercise caution while operating a motor vehicle. In this particular instance, it remains to be seen if veering into oncoming traffic was a breach of that duty. If so, the hospitalized Prescott man may have the basis for a personal injury claim against the other driver.
