Tips for having a safe Halloween

There is no question that Halloween is a holiday enjoyed by people of all ages throughout the state of Wisconsin. Many children who are usually at home eating dinner or doing homework are thrilled by the prospect of being outside after dark, often running from house to house for free candy. While experiencing this thrill it is important that young people are also aware of their surroundings and follow traffic laws regarding when and where to cross streets. Doing so could result in fewer pedestrian accidents occurring.

In addition to making sure to check both ways before crossing the street, children need to be instructed to utilize crosswalks, when they are available, and cross at corners. To make youngsters easier for drivers to see, it is also a good idea to add reflective material to costumes or provide them with glow sticks or flashlights.

Drivers need to be aware that pedestrian traffic will be different on Halloween. Not all kids will go to the corner or crosswalk to cross the street and could dart into the street from between parked cars in the middle of the block. Accordingly, drivers need to take steps to make sure they are focusing on the road by eliminating other distractions such as using a phone. The hours between 4 and 8 p.m. are when drivers need to be particularly vigilant.

Taking these steps will help keep Halloween a safe and fun holiday for everyone.

When pedestrians are injured in a motor vehicle accident the injuries can be serious. In these situations a personal injury lawsuit might be filed against the driver of the vehicle to try to obtain compensation for the injuries suffered by the pedestrian.
