Fatal accident on Wisconsin 164 under investigation

Every once in a while, law enforcement officials come upon an accident in which the cause is not readily observable. A recent fatal accident on Wisconsin 164 provided police with a number of issues to investigate. They are not even sure who was driving at the time of the crash.

A 37-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were the only occupants of a vehicle heading north on the Wisconsin highway in Washington County. For a reason police have not yet officially documented, the vehicle veered across the opposing lanes of traffic and into a ditch line. After that, it slammed into a culvert, flew into the air and crashed into a pole.

When the vehicle finally came to a rest on its roof, the woman was trapped within the wreckage. At some point during the crash, the man was thrown out of the vehicle. Both of them suffered severe injuries to which they succumbed. It is not clear whether either or both of them died at the scene or subsequently.

It could take some time for authorities to verify which of the two occupants was driving the car. Having this information is not just about the potential filing of a wrongful death claim. Knowing how their loved ones died could provide each family with some sense of closure regarding the tragedy. In any civil litigation arising from the fatal accident, it will be necessary to prove who was driving and that they were negligent in a manner that caused or contributed to the single vehicle crash. The families of both parties may benefit from understanding their rights and responsibilities in connection with this tragic fatal accident.
