Motor vehicle accidents that are the result of drunk driving occur in communities throughout the nation, including Western Wisconsin, on an all too regular basis. Recently, one such incident taking place at the popular South by Southwest Festival, located in another state, left multiple people injured and three dead. The incident marred what most consider a fun music and film festival.
According to authorities, a 21-year-old man drove a vehicle into other cars and a festival crowd as he attempted to flee a police officer. At the time of the incident the man was allegedly intoxicated.
Most of the individuals involved in this tragic accident are young, in their 20s. In addition to the three whose injuries were so severe that they died, another 22 received some level of treatment at area hospitals. Some of the injuries these individuals suffered were described as internal injuries. It is unclear how the lives of the injured individuals will be impacted in the future.
It is fair to say that none of the people who were hurt or killed as a result of the incident expected it to happen. Depending on the severity of the injuries suffered it is possible that the lives of some of the people involved will change forever. This could translate into great expense for those individuals. Accordingly, it is possible that in addition to criminal charges of capital murder, the alleged drunk driver could also face legal action in civil court. In addition to lawsuits by the injured individuals, family members of those who were killed might file wrongful death lawsuits as well.
