Driving tips for Wisconsin's latest winter storm

Wisconsin is currently being hit with another powerful winter storm, which could result in a foot of snow in the northwestern part of the state and blizzard conditions elsewhere.

A winter storm warning has been issued for western and northwestern Wisconsin and is expected to last until noon Friday. Most of the rest of the state will remain under a winter weather advisory for much of today.

Weather officials are saying that the storm has the potential to be dangerous, especially on the state's roads and highways. That's why individuals are advised to stay at home, if at all possible.

For those who do have to venture out into the storm, officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation advise using extreme caution and keeping these safety tips in mind:

  • Allow for your trip to take plenty of extra time.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half-way full.
  • Let friends and family know where you are going to be.
  • Check the road conditions before you leave by calling 5-1-1 or visiting www.511wi.gov.
  • Keep a winter emergency survival kit in your vehicle with snacks, water, cell phone power adapter, and extra clothes or blankets.

Also, when it comes to driving in winter weather, it's important to slow down and avoid tailgating the car in front of you. Car accidents are very common when the roads are slick and people are driving too fast for conditions.

If a serious accident does occur, it's important to document what happened and get medical treatment right away. A personal injury lawyer can also help to gather evidence and work with insurance providers while you focus on your recovery.
