Drunk drivers expected this Super Bowl Sunday

This weekend is Super Bowl Sunday, which means that many people in Wisconsin and the rest of the country will be drinking while they watch the big game. It also means that some of these people will make the bad decision to get behind the wheel of their vehicles after they have had too much to drink, and a few of these individuals will end up causing fatal car accidents.

In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drunk drivers caused 43 percent of the fatal car accidents that occurred on Super Bowl Sunday in 2012. On a typical day, drunk drivers are responsible for 31 percent of fatal car accidents, the NHTSA reported, so football's biggest game certainly makes an impact.

Fox News recently reported that more drunk drivers tend to come from bars and restaurants on Super Bowl Sunday rather than house parties. This is somewhat surprising as many bartenders are instructed to cut off patrons who appear to have had too much to drink.

But a bar operations manager told Fox News that's not always easy during big games like the Super Bowl. People tend to drink more than usual when their team starts doing poorly or just because they are so into the game that they lose track of how much they have had.

That's why anyone who plans on drinking during the Super Bowl this weekend is advised to plan ahead for a sober ride home. Once a drunk driving accident has occurred, the damage has already been done and it will be too late to go back.

Not only can a drunk driver injure him or herself, innocent people in other cars can also be seriously injured or killed. With that said, enjoy the game -- responsibly.
