Friend watches volunteer firefighter die after auto accident

There are few feelings worse than not being able to help a friend that you know may be dying. This is what happened to one man in Wisconsin after his friend was involved in a motorcycle vs. auto accident. He had been told that since he's not an EMT, he should not touch a victim for fear of making any injuries worse.

It may not provide much solace to the victim's friend to know that a fire captain from another department who happened upon the accident was not able to save the fallen volunteer firefighter. His injuries were just too severe to overcome. The victim wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and to both honor their friend and learn from his death, they will all now be wearing helmets anytime they ride.

The group of friends was taking a Sunday ride when the accident happened. As the group approached South Road and Highway 50 in Lyons, a truck slammed into the victim. There is no information regarding how the investigation into this tragedy is progressing. Investigators will need to determine if factors such as impairment, speed or inattentive driving were the cause of the accident.

As the family grieves for their loss, they may also be wondering what charges, if any, will be filed against the driver that hit the victim. Under Wisconsin law, his family may file a wrongful death claim against the driver as well. If they are able to provide the court with evidence of negligence on the part of the truck driver, the court may award them costs and damages they have incurred since the motorcycle vs. auto accident.
