Deadly car accident on Wisconsin Highway 16

A portion of Wisconsin Highway 16 became the scene of a deadly accident on Sept. 8. The car accident took the life of two people and injured three others. The accident is still under investigation.

The preliminary report says that an eastbound vehicle left the road for an unknown reason and crossed over the median into oncoming traffic on the westbound side of the highway. A vehicle headed west was unable to avoid a collision with the eastbound vehicle. The eastbound vehicle had two occupants and the westbound vehicle had three occupants.

The driver and passenger in the vehicle that crossed the median both suffered fatal injuries in the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle is still in an area hospital after suffering from unspecified injuries. The two passengers in the vehicle were children. They were both injured as well and were taken to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

It may never be known what caused the westbound vehicle to leave the road, but investigators will do their best to determine what happened. Factors such as speed, alcohol or some other distraction may be considered as causes of the car accident. Independent of the official investigation, the family of the deceased passenger may file a wrongful death claim against the estate of the deceased driver. The injured parties in the other vehicle may file personal injury claims against the estate as well. Even if the victims prevail, no one wins in this situation; one family has lost a member, and it isn't clear how long the recovery will be for the three injured people.
