Wisconsin deputy's speed before car accident determined

One of the important factors in every crash investigation is how fast the parties were going just prior to the incident. The Wisconsin State Patrol has finally been able to determine that factor regarding a car accident involving a deputy and a 20-year-old driver. The young driver was killed as a result of the collision.

The Fond du Lac deputy's patrol car had a computer in it just as most patrol cars in Wisconsin do nowadays. All of the messages that are sent back and forth from that computer are logged. It was the use of the logs of the computer messages in the deputy's patrol car that helped the accident reconstruction investigators determine the deputy's speed at the time of the accident.

The victim had stopped at a stop sign at an intersection. As he proceeded through the intersection, he was struck by the deputy's patrol car. The investigation concluded that the deputy had been traveling at speeds between 80 and 92 miles per hour just prior to the collision. The deputy had been responding to a call regarding a hit-and-run at the time.

It will now be up to the district attorney to decide whether criminal charges should be filed against the deputy in connection with the events that led to the car accident. Also, the family of the victim may exercise their right to file a wrongful death claim. The report regarding the deputy's speed on the night of the accident may be used in both criminal and civil court to prove that the officer was negligent and that his actions led to the death of the victim.
