Foggy conditions lead to fatal car crash in St. Croix County

Witnesses watching a serious accident take place in front of their eyes on July 31 in St. Croix County likely didn’t know that they were also witnessing the seventh fatality to take place this year in the state of Wisconsin. Taking place at the intersection of County Highway G and County Highway T in Erin Prairie, this fatal crash is a reminder to others across the state of just how dangerous of a mix inclement weather and distracted driving can be.

Just before 6:30 in the morning, a 66-year-old River Falls man was heading northbound along County Highway T towards the intersection. Conditions were incredibly foggy, decreasing the visibility of himself and other motorists in the area. Witnesses say that he stopped at the stop sign before proceeding through the intersection. It was at this point that his minivan was struck by a pick-up truck driven by a 36-year-old New Richmond man.

The force of the impact likely sent both cars tumbling out of control because when rescue workers arrived on the scene, they discovered the minivan upside down with the pick-up truck only feet away, resting on its side. Although both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident, the fatal injuries suffered by the 66-year-old man were too great and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Was distracted driving to blame in this accident or could decreased visibility and lack of vigilance have been the ultimate cause of the crash? The answer to this question will remain a mystery until after deputies from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office complete their investigation. Until then, the family of the 66-year-old man will mourn his death, wondering if his death was wrongful in nature.
