A Wisconsin man was in court recently after being charged in the deaths of two men. Police say the man was drunk when he caused the car accident that got him arrested. His bail was set at $25,000 cash at the hearing.
The accident occurred when the Wisconsin man ran a stop sign and slammed into another vehicle. The man's Cadillac ended up on its roof in a snow bank while the other vehicle ended up in a yard. The driver was arrested and taken to the Manitowoc County Jail. He told police that he had been using marijuana and had several drinks prior to the accident. Police believe the man should be charged with homicide in addition to charges related to those that were seriously injured-all exacerbated by the fact that it is believed he was intoxicated at the time.
Both men that were killed suffered such severe injuries that they were both pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant of the vehicle has to be taken to an area hospital by helicopter due to serious injuries. The man was unconscious at the scene and sustained several internal injuries along with a crushed pelvis. At last report, he was still in critical condition after being transferred to another hospital. Three other people were injured as well; and were all treated for their injuries and released.
As the investigation into the accident continues and the criminal case progresses, the families of the two deceased victims and the injured parties have the right to file civil actions against the driver. Each party will have to demonstrate to the court that the driver was negligent and the driver's actions caused or contributed to either the death or injury of each party involved in the car accident. Should the parties prevail in their civil actions, they may be awarded the costs and damages incurred as the result of the accident.
