Three teens killed in distracted driving crash near Hudson

Residents in and around Hudson have probably heard about the recent devastating crash that took the lives of three teenage boys. The crash, which happened in late July, has brought a lot of attention to the serious concern of distracted driving.

Distracted driving can come in many forms, from answering a cellphone to tuning into a radio station, but in the case of this fatal crash, the boys were reportedly being just that: boys. The four teenagers in the vehicle were trying to get the attention of a girl in a nearby vehicle, according to reports.

The crash, which happened on an interstate near Hudson, killed three New Richmond High School students. The 17-year-old driver was apparently looking in the center console of the vehicle he was driving, reportedly trying to find a piece of paper to write his phone number on.

Police investigation shows that the boys encountered a girl driving in a nearby lane, and wanted to get her attention. According to information obtained from witnesses and the one survivor of the crash, a 17-year-old boy, they wanted to write their phone number on a piece of paper for the girl to see.

As the driver looked down, he crashed his sport utility vehicle into the back of a tractor-trailer amid heavy traffic. The driver, as well as two passengers, was killed in the crash. The father of the 17-year-old driver understands that the boys were distracted but has also brought attention to the fact that a warning sign telling drivers of a construction zone ahead was not illuminated at the time of the crash. He says he believes the sign would have made a difference.
